Good book!
I just finished reading 'Nehru: A contemporary's estimate' by Walter Crocker. This book came out recently and should be on the stands of most bookshops. Crocker was the High Commissioner from Australia to India during Nehru's prime ministership. So, it is truly an objective view (not a British or Indian viewpoint) and also it is a view of the time when Nehru could be seen in isolation rather than in the shadow of Gandhiji. The book is extremely good because:
1. It is very pithy- only 185-odd pages. It also restricts itself to the 16 years of Nehru's rule than his entire life...so no ramblings about childhood incidents
2. It is amazingly knowledgable about India and its psyche, given the book is written by an Australian
3. It is uncannily prophetic- the author had published this book in 1966, and the predictions he made of India are very accurate, if we see the India we have become, 40 years hence
4. It is very sympathetic to India and Nehru: it generates the same sense of respect and awe for our leaders at the time of the independence struggle that usually is the effect of reading Gandhiji or Rajaji
Don't miss it.

A very good read
What does an occupier feel when he is in the occupied country? USA had the experience in several places. But the recent Iraqi occupation has given them lots of problems. The returning GIs had a high rate of mental problems due to the constant atmosphere of hate and fear they had to live through. Along with Papillon, Pied Pier, there are several books that deal with this aspect of human(inhuman) behaviour of people during the wars. Should we have wars?

Agreed, babai. The President is just one man...very difficult for him to make any difference, specially in a lobby 'democracy' like the US. It is improbable that there will be much of a difference in the way the US is going to do things- specially for us here in India. But I am still impressed with Obama as an individual. He breaks the mould of the career politician. He is erudite, he is middle-class, he is an orator, he is black, and above all, he seems sincerely to want to change things. He may not achieve it- but he seems to want to try.
The entire campaign was a good testimony to the man's character- first the attacks from Hilary, and then McCain- you got to agree that he is pretty unflappable. If you have not heard the 'Towards a more perfect union' speech, you should (on Youtube). It was a bracve speech, given the circumstances.
And as for the anti-incumbency being the primary reason for his selection- I am not sure I agree. For instance, he had fought and won a pitched battle with Hilary. A desire to kick out the republicans would have been met by electing Hilary too...so why choose Obama? Probably because people are tired of the Clintons too- which is the point: people wanted something different. But the true factor probably is that Obama is very compelling- like I said, he reminds me of Lincoln in many ways.

Really nothing to get excited about!! like a headline I saw in a newspaper yesterday.--the headline said record even for the young age (???). Inside it says --5th youngest. What kind of a record is that? Ok. There will be a woman sometime ( though they are still lagging behind--even their alter (old) egos-the brits had a woman premier already)
2. The career is not that great, as you can find several people with that kind of a thing and I donot believe that the American people chose him for his ideals etc. It is a pure anti-incumbency vote and if the candidates were reversed, I am sure McCain would have won. Poor McCain- a departing Bush left the legacy- of dissatisfaction and resentment of the people- to him and retired. He was the guy at the wrong place at the wrong time.
3. What is said in the campaign speeches and what is said in acceptance speeches is seldom followed through. Let us give him 2 yrs and then judge. ( even his stand against Outsourcing, H-1 visas and his relationship with India.) Most of the time Pragmatism rules the Whitehouse and not policy.

On this momentous occassion (Obama coming to power), what is the teacher telling her students? What is her opinion about the whole thing? Cmon SSKgaru!
Kennedy or Lincoln?
People compare Obama to Kennedy- but I think he is closer to Lincoln. Be his oratory, his collectedness and his generally high self-belief, he rings familiar to Lincoln (as much as I have read of him). If you have not seen it, you shoud see his acceptance speech at Chicago on Nov 4th- it is really good. His career also seems to smack of a similar unorthodoxy as Lincoln's.
It may not make too much difference to us here in India or ultimately even to the US, but I do think this person is definitely breaking the mould for US Presidents. Check this link about his times in Harvard.

Micheal Crichton dies of cancer
Michael Crichton, the million-selling author of such historic and prehistoric science thrillers as "Jurassic Park," "Timeline" and "The Andromeda Strain," has died of cancer, his family said.
He died Tuesday in Los Angeles at age 66 after a long battle with the illness.
Crichton was a brand-name author, known for his stories of disaster and systematic breakdown, such as the rampant microbe of "The Andromeda Strain" or dinosaurs running amok in "Jurassic Park," one of his many books that became major Hollywood movies.

Sometimes, JKR picked the names for her characters from the map. Snape, if you don't know, is the name of a small town somewhere in England. Jobless for the weekend

2. Lavanya--presumably busy with INTERNALS, MIDS or whatever u call it. What little time is left is not enough for a chat with a friend or a circuit of ORKUT. Anyway, she reads the blog, don't she? THAT also is participation.

5. Mrudula--vide supra. May be a few functions also strain her.
6. Srikanth--Busy preparing for exams and busy polishing his (soft)wares. We miss his excellent-"from the heart" poetry.
7. Vidya--never an enthusiastic blogger--the true American with concerns for privacy--Joking! too busy with tighteneder schedule.(already tight--tightened and now more tightened--how do you like the new word I coined. does it convey full meaning?)
8. Sudha--too busy being lazy. No time left for anything else.
9. SSV--Well, "cricket anyone--let's come on!" joking again--too busy a schedule.
10. SLK--active and the life and soul of the party.

It is a tough task to narrow things down to 10. Let me try.
A few observations first.
1.Of all the Rasas Karuna is the one that is felt more easily and is the one that comes out quicker than other emotions. (It is rooted in the fact that empathy is a group response and all animals find survival is better in a group. 6. Hank Rearden, who knows his strengths and yet is willing to be exploited by sentiment--you see this in several elder members of the families. Youngsters have all the rights and no responsibilities. I feel John Galt is a bit too practical.
7. For pure horror--Dracula
8. for pure deductive reasoning--which is essential in any field of constructive action--Who else--It is Sherlock Holmes.
9.For applying Psychology--not Jeeves but Miss Marple who studies the village life and from it deduces human nature and the culprits. Yet she is human. In one book she rushes for a sale to buy bedspreads and manages to buy things in the (c)rush.
10. As a doctor I have seen it happen to several greats and I always feel " but for the grace of God, there go I" and hence we always run to keep up with the latest trends--- Dr. Joseph Pearson in Final Diagnosis.
It is a tough task to narrow things down to 10. Let me try.

OK, singular lack of interest all round, it seems :) Anyway, here is my quick 10. I thought these were the most complex, most consistent and most entertaining characters that I had read so far.

So apparently, CDC decided to do a "follow-up survey" on whether I got sick from the "norovirus" they identified as the cause of the sickness. Well, I did not, so I am not dying yet, but I gave CDC a piece of my mind as to how they should leave the message. Something better than "Contact Investigation", which can scare the bejeesus out of people.

A scary message
I come home from class Monday night, and Srinivas tells me the Center for Disease Control (CDC) called.
I was on this horrible trip from Boston to Los Angeles 2 weeks ago, where 12 passengers on the plane I was traveling got sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Our plane got diverted to Chicago, where we were put on another plane to LA, and I ended up missing my San Jose connecting flight and flew back the next morning after staying in LA.

A chance to meet the richest american, but more importantly a great man

But more importantly he is one of the world's successful investors, noted for his philosophy of value-investing, investing in companies with good performance rather than airy hype. Known as "Oracle of Omaha", he still lives in the house he bought in 1958 for $32,000 ( current value $500,000, less than the median house price in Bay area) in Omaha, Nebraska and drives his own car, a Cadillac. He donated $30.7 Billion to the Bill Gates foundation, largest charitable donation in history. A charity auction for lunch with him sold for $650,000.
Along with 26 other students from Haas School of Business, I will be traveling to Omaha on November 21st to meet this great man in person for a two-hour lunch and Q&A session.

Tree Sitters are down

After almost two years perched in the sky, Berkeley's tree-sitters came back to Earth Tuesday. The expensive and dangerous campaign was orchestrated to block construction of a $124 million athletic facility which required cutting down the centuries old redwoods. Battling the tree-sitters cost the university about $1.5 million.
For months, Piedmont Avenue, which runs in front of the trees, became home to an encampment of lawn chairs, tents, hammocks, mattresses and patchouli oil.
In December 2006, the protestors wrapped themselves in the First Amendment and planted themselves in opposition to the university's plans. Additionally, three groups — the city of Berkeley, California Oak Foundation and the Panoramic Hill Association — sued the university to prevent the construction of the athletic facility.

Three weeks ago, a judge ruled in favor of the university.
An ultimatum from UC-Berkeley on Friday morning gave the tree-sitters 72 hours to vacate. When the deadline expired, university officials cut off delivery of food and water. By Monday, the grove the tree-sitters had been trying to save was logged and mulched. They sought refuge in the remaining tree, a lone redwood. UC built scaffolding around the redwood, then trimmed branch by branch. So the sitters climbed higher. By Tuesday, there was nowhere higher to climb. They demanded that $6 million be donated to environmental and Native American groups. UC rejected that demand. So protesters announced they would have to be forcibly removed. Surrendering to UC-Berkeley Police Chief Victoria Harrison from his plastic crate atop the beam, the tree-sitter who called himself Huckleberry threw his fist in the air and waved an Earth flag. Exuberantly, the crowd waved back. "We'll fight other development — Strawberry Canyon, People's Park,'' vowed supporter Arthur Fonseca. But within hours, the crowd had dispersed. All that was left were logs, construction equipment, and one lonely redwood. And then it was cut down.

About Hancock
Recently, I have seen the movie "Hancock" starring Will Smith, the latest highest paid actor in hollywood.It's about a man with supernatural powers getting booed by people eventhough he tried to help them.People don't like him because the damage he causes is more compared to the lives he saves and good work put on by him.One day he saves the life of a man who inturn helps Hancock to gain people's admiration by planning out different things.The story gets twisted here when he finds a lady with supernatural powers who is supposed to be his partner lives like an ordinary woman.He gets to know his flash back from her which he had forgotten and knows that he can survive and continue to save the world from bad things only if the lady and him lived separately as is the nature's rule.Finally, the lady forgets her past in some sort of accident and lives with the man who helped Hancock in gaining people's hearts.This assures Hancock to live separately, save the world and feeling secured that she lives safely.As it goes without saying in any storyline Hancock fights with villians who try to deny him his magical powers and kills them.The graphics are quite stunning and the dts effect makes it thrilling.Overall, it's a movie to watch!!!!
WALL*E Review
Excellent animations, Apple/Pixar's signature glossy images, a decent story line and a WHOLE LOT OF PONTIFICATION.
It felt a little like they were "green washing". From what I read about the movie, Pixar had this idea for a while, but did not dare to put it out till now. Felt a little opportunistic, considering the message they were trying to propagate.
It was not particularly funny and a lot of the symbolism was lost on the kids. It was an adult movie packaged for kids.
I would take Nemo over this any day.

Most recent episode of "Lost"
Lost is a very popular TV series here in US, but yesterday, I had my own episode of lost.
Aditya and I went to the theater to watch the movie, WALL*E. He wanted to popcorn, which I bought. So my hands were full of popcorn, cookies and water. I took one step to pick up paper napkins and turned around, and he was gone.
After more than 5 minutes of frantic searching by me and theater people, I was near edge of panic and they were about to call the police and call an abduction alert, when he was found watching "Batman" in another theater.
In the 5 seconds my back was turned, he ran around the popcorn shop, went past the ticket collecting person( who did not see an unattended child run inside :-O ), went into the theater that was playing Batman, and was watching the movie.
I am thinking of buying a leash now!!!!!!!!

Life of Pi
Just finished reading the book by that name. The author is Yan Martel, a Canadian. The book is very good. It is about an Indian from Pondichery who is marooned on a lifeboat with a tiger in the Pacific. Apart from wiritng very entertaining prose, this foriegn author has a surprisingly good understanding of how a (South) Indian would think. Warning: like typical survivor stories, it does get a bit gruesome in parts. Try it sometime...

That means 'globalization at our doorstep' in Kannada. Today morning, we went to buy some fruits from the street vendor outside the house. The vendor quoted a steep price for highly polished apples (with tiny stickers...a web address printed on them). On querying him about their origins, he told me that they are from Washington. I asked him if I could have the local variety instead. He said that the local apples will not be in stock for a month. If I didn't like the US ones, I could have the Australian ones, apparently. In the global village, even street vendors sell imported fruits, it seems!

A preview to the live performance
I was able to finally get Aditya to sing the whole Bhaja Govindam in one sitting ( of course, including some antics. As nanna says "padarasam ali")
He promised me he will sing it in the pelli, but I will believe it when I see him sing.

Happy Days!
I am not talking of the movie.
The enthusiasm of the young is unbelievable. Keep it coming.
Re; literary discussions, I am a bit busy(read lazy) and so shall get around to a list this week definitely.
I hear a few kids felt that this literary track is a bit of a tough nut to crack.
YES! and that is because you guys never had the habit of reading, so you don't know what you have been missing.
The whole idea was to kindle interest in literature as we feel that a person's personality is not rounded off well if they don't have literary inclinations.
So long! till next post with a list of books readable (or must be read?)

New visitors' point in Bangalore
Any Singampallis straying into Bangalore henceforth will have an additional point to visit as part of the city tour. Last weekend, Poonam and I had participated in a tree planting drive organized by an Eco group. The spot where the trees were being planted was Lal Bagh, which I thought was a bit like giving money to a rich man.
We had gone prepared to bend our backs and plant a good number of saplings, but it turned out that there were more volunteers than saplings. Big-wigs like Kris (current CEO of Infosys) were there to be part of the event, so I got to say hello to the man who runs my company at Lal Bagh- which was funny given that both of us have frequented the same campus every day for the last 3 years and not met so far.
At the end of the session, we did plant one sapling and marked the spot. Hope to see it as a full blown tree in a few years...and all visitors can enjoy this excellent park while we show them the tree of our labours!

Almost done with my shopping
For 3 days I have been in Hyderabad.
Finished so many works!!!!!
Finished buying air travel bags, clothes, air ticket, spectacles and sundry things.
Been to IEG(Institute for electronic governance), JNTU and got a DD worth 11000 for teaching juniors and training them in JKC(Jawhar knowledge Center).
Been to Bhargavi peddamma's new house and we enjoyed a drive in Sesanna's new car.

As i said last time, a good book is many things at different times.
It helps one to develop as a thinking, feeling being.
It can have a great impact on a person or even the society in general.
We all know how Gandhiji was inspired by the stories of Hariscandra and SravanaKumara.
Abe Lincoln, on meeting Harriet Beecher Stove, said (referencing UNCLE TOM'S CABIN)
"So you're the little woman that started this great war?"
So, I would like each of us to read atleast a few great works. Let them be in Telugu, English, Hindi or any other language.
All the books are not readily available and need not be bought either. All of us have good libraries and we can catch up on out reading when we visit each other.
First I shall start with the list in Telugu.

Kobbari Lauzu & Durga Pinni
I made kobbari lauzu today and it reminded me of Durga pinni, although I did not spend nearly as much time as pinni did in making it. A can of caramel milkmaid and some endu kobbari and it was ready in 10 minutes.
There are some foods that always remind me of certain people. Peddamma for semya payasam, Indiratta for ravva kesari and durga pinni for kobbari lauzu.
