Back in USA

Adi and I are back in USA. In his own words, "While I am feeling happy that I am back home, I also feel sad that I left India. It did not feel like 3 weeks, it felt like 5 days".

He also said he promised many people he will be back next summer, so HE HAS TO GO to India next summer.

His top 3 tourist attractions : 3. Bahubali 2. Shore temple at Mahabalipuram 1. Lord Venkateswara temple. He qualified his number 1 choice like so : "I don't know why I like the temple the best, especially since I lost my toy there, but somehow I like it a lot."

His most favorite activities at various places

Chennai: Buying his Ben 10 toys

Bangalore: Playing Battleship

Kurnool: Watching non-stop movies

Addanki:Eating cotton candy sold on the street

Kavali: Everything

He also made the following comment which really shocked / amazed / surprised me: "May be when I grow up, I will move to India, like you moved to America. Then I will be able to see Ammamma and tata often." Who knows? That might happen too..................

Over the last two decades in the SF Bay Area, I’ve run into several Indian American Silicon Valley moguls who have given my pedestrian self the impression that to really, really have arrived in life you must, besides traveling first-class,  know your dry from your sweet and your varietal from your bouquet. They made it clear that the route to becoming a wine snob might not lie by warehouse stores and in gallon jars. Indians, they swore, have never been wine connoisseurs.

While the Hindu scriptures of the Vedic age refer to “Soma,” an intoxicating drink offered by Brahmin priests, winemaking and wine appreciation have never been organic to the Indian way of life, at least in recent history. Muslim conquests and colonial rule blurred the way the Indian subcontinent perceived alcohol. The British Raj pegged down generations of Indians to the sway of whiskey and scotch.

These drinking traditions take time to supplant. “The second and third generation of Indian Americans may have begun to appreciate wine but the first generation is still into Johnny Walker Blue Label and Chivas Regal,” says Raghu Sawkar, owner of Sonoma’s Sawkar Family Vineyards.

I've been listening to a lot of The Beatles (George Harrison and John Lennon in particular) recently and stumbled upon this by chance.

I remember, this bhajan used to be(still is) one of my all time favorites . I liked it so much that i 'actually' (in the true sense of the word) chanted , if this played in the background.

Thank you sasanna for introducing me to such good music! You can actually hear emotion in their voices :-)

I was talking to one of my juniors from GITAM called karthik recently - giving some advice about universities etc in general.

Towards the end of it all...when thank you(s) and dont mention it(s) were in order he said:

"Maybe I haven't told u earlier, but I also read some really gud articles on your blog "Singampalli Happenings". Pardon me, but I am also trying to plagiarize(hehwahahh!->villainous laugh) the idea of starting a blog of my own with my cousins"

So we are not only awe-inspiring...we are inspiring too!

What can i tell u abt her?

If she was free to express how she really feels, amma and nanna would hear this: "Give me all the attention and everything else and send Mrudula to live with Grandma." If she is in a tearing hurry to go out and cannot catch my eye, then she's definitely wearing my clothes/shoes!! I never dare let an angry lavi comb my hair - seriously off limits!

But, she is one person who doesn't need words to understand me. She has perfected a language of snarls and smiles; frowns and winks; sniffs and snorts; gasps and sighs....that can undermine any tale i'm telling. More than Santa Claus, she knows when i've been bad and good!

(Do you have a sister? If you have, you shall know what I mean.)

A toast : "To the chocolate chip in my cookie life, who never found her second toy until I found my first." It was nice growing up with someone like you - someone to lean on, someone to count on... someone to tell on! :-) Love u!!

Rains are still coming

Recently Swathi was in Hyderabad for grihapravesam.She forgot her cell phone in Silparam, where she has gone for shopping, and remembered it only at 9 pm.We tried the number, and surprisingly it was answered by a person who said “Yes! The phone is with me .you forgot it here in our shop. you can come and get it even now”. When I rushed there along with Swathi, the young shop wallah was in all smiles and promptly gave back the phone saying to Swathi”koyi tension nahi.Phone lelo lelo”

Me and Durga went to patala (photo frames) shop in Kavali, to replace a broken glass for the Lakshmi Murthi in photo frame. The work was delicate and done to the complete satisfaction to us. I offered Rs 50 to the shop keeper who refused and wanted only Rs 10.When there was no change, he put some corners to the frame and returned Rs 30 he was having.
