More harvest - Prize Cucumber
There was a giant cucumber growing in the back, that we missed. Found it today as we were spraying Neem Oil to kill a fungus that was growing.

Also some large organic Heirloom (Naatu) tomatoes....Very RED, very juicy and very flavourful....

What a year!
We had the first Non-congress elected govt.in India.
George Fernandez pressured the govt into lifting the Baroda Dynamite case against him as a precondition for joining the Cabinet as a minister. Then he chased Coke out of the country.
We had our first Indigenous cola drink "77".
"Come August" SLK was born (incidentally her mother was born the next day, albeit 25 yrs before: and the first of nexgen Singampallis was born a week later but 2 yrs before. What a week! for other events in August see the calender below.)
And the Uthpathams like "Divi Seema cyclone" happened in November that year. More than 10,000 people died.
What a year!
Happy Birth Day Krupa!

Ekaveera
I recently found eTV broadcasting this movie. This is a classic book by Viswanatha Satyanarayana that I was fortunate to find online.
http://new-rare-e-books.blogspot.com/2010/05/ekaveera-viswanadha-satyanarayana.html
I read the book and then watched the movie.
This is the story of two friends who unwittingly marry each other's lovers and suffer the consequences. To me, it was a little too melodramatic. However, the premise was not too far fetched. What was interesting was the difference between how the male and female protagonists deal with the situation.
The females readily accept the situation and adjust to life with their respective spouses. The males however, one pines for the lost love and the other is burned by jealousy .
In general, why do women so easily adapt to circumstances? Is it cultural, rational or emotional? Is it nature or is it nurture?
That debate aside, the film has excellent songs by SiNaRe and Devulapalli and the famous duet of SPB and Ghantasala.

A morning stroll
The running trail that I frequent (scoffing noises from Poonam here) is about 1.5 miles and winds through a clump of trees and next to a storm drain that is fashioned like a stream. It is quite picturesque. This AM, the unimaginable happened: both Raghav and Poonam got up early enough to consider a family morning stroll. It gets too hot after 8 AM, so this was a good opportunity. So we went. Some snaps:

| The trail |

| Baaffly! |
![]() |
| Mom and me |
![]() |
| How do we tell him that the moon comes in the night when we see it only in the day? |
![]() |
| Hey, wait for me! |
More snaps:
Raghav enjoyed the outing very much. The trail has some trees that butterflies tend to roost in groups on, and Raghav had a good time trying to count and touch them. Video here- you can hear him counting ("one two, one two"), saying "baaffly" (sometimes "ba-ta-fly") and trying to touch them.

Our thoughts with you, Anna and team!
All the gaffes, apologies, insinuations and recriminations only make Anna Hazare, Kejriwal and others more human and hence, their efforts more edifying. These well-meaning folks have taken on a daunting task again and again, even as their supporters dwindle. Gandhi and others had a (well deserved) public limelight and (universally accepted) moral ascendancy over their foes. How hard it must be to carry on the righteous fight when everyone heckles! True chivalry is in fighting a lost and reviled cause, for the principle of it.
The Indian citizen is letting that rare window of opportunity, a chance to lift that crushing weight of corruption from our nation's shoulders, go by. If this fight is lost, it would be difficult to imagine when else in the future would we be able to muster an united front again. Waiting for a demigod to clean the Augean stables is literally about waiting for a myth to come true- better perhaps to follow a frail man and become a collective Hercules.
Here is something for the doubters and the critics to consider: when the history books are written a few years from now, would it be Hazare or them, that will enjoy the favor of the generations to come?
Alternate opinions welcome- this is my 2 cents. Apologies if I struck too serious a tone for our family blog! :-)

The importance of being Earnest
I watched this 1950's movie adaptation of Oscar Wilde's comedy couple of years back on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. Today, I was watching the telugu movie "Ashta Chemma" and the story sounded very familar. About halfway through, I realized this was the telugu adaptation of this comedy play.
Although this is a relatively old movie, I did not see it until now. It was a refreshing, clean comedy, albeit a bit over the top. It was nicely adapted to Telugu tastes. Both the lead actors did great, it was hard to believe it was the first movie for both of them. The thing I liked the most about that movie was the dialogue delivery of all the actors, they were speaking Telugu, not tenglish or tendi or any other mishmash of multiple languages with crazy accents. It was a pleasant watch. Srini Avasarala was impressive, speaking Telugu excellent for an NRI. He reminds me of the comedians of yesteryear, like Relangi and Rajababu.
