Kindled!

Someone gifted me kindly a  Kindle (Ah...wordplay! :-D). Although it cannot replace the pleasure of a book in one's hand, it sure is a nicely done toy. I immediately downloaded some classics from the Gutenberg Project and started reading Around the world in eighty days yet again. Very nice font etc, so makes reading a pleasure.

It is just amazing how much detail Verne packs into his books- his ever interested (and sympathetic) eye seems to miss nothing. Here are a few excerpts about Phileas Fogg's journey from Bombay to Calcutta by train. What a master!

More hikes & walks - Shoreline & Fremont Older

Here's two weeks into one.
Saturday last week found us very tired after a late night party the day before. Aditya's friend and his family came over for a dinner party. After hours of Kinect and Wii that lasted well into midnight, none of us had the energy to drive an hour to the more picturesque hikes. As a compromise, we took a long 2.5 hr walk in the Shore line park.

Birds of Shoreline - Charleston Slough
As a shout-out to anna, this is one of the great bird watching options in the Bay area. We saw some egrets, humming birds, geese, sparrows, cormorants, pelicans and gulls. You can find some pics here.

Bayshore

We also climbed down close to the shores of the bay and found some barnacles and barnacle fossils.

The shoreline trail is along the flight path for the private plans that land as Palo Alto airport, so we were able to watch many planes take off and land.

And of course, a hike is incomplete unless followed by a hearty lunch, so we stopped at Passage to India for a buffet lunch. They have THE MOST AWESOME gulab jamoons. There can be no other glowing testimonial for their gulab jamoon beyond Aditya eating a second helping for a total of 4 jamoons.

The week before last saturday, we hiked the Fremont Older Preserve in Cupertino.
http://bahiker.com/southbayhikes/fremontolder.html

Instead of taking the 2.7 mile hike recommended by the BaHiker, we followed the more strenuous 3.7 mile hike suggested in Afoot & Afield in the Bay Area. This is a mostly exposed trail, and definitely not a good one for a hot summer morning. However, we had an unseasonally cold and cloudy day with some showers that Saturday, so we did not get baked by the sun. This was the first hike of "moderate" difficulty that we took Aditya on and he handled it well.

This is a shared trail and we saw many equestrians and dog-walkers using the trails. I was surprised to learn that while dog-walkers are expected to clean up after their pets, the same regulation does not apply to horseback riders. So we came across quite a few lumps of horse manure that marred our experience a little bit.

During this hike, we saw grape vines from a nearby winery and a spectacular field full of yellow wildflowers that looked just like the field of yellow mustard in the famous DDLJ song.

We wrapped it up by going back to Bill's Cafe for lunch, with Croissant French Toast and Buckwheat Pancakes.

Templar treasure lost forever

I discovered this bench at Bangalore Rlwy Station (snap attached)...and started looking for clues for treasure. Then I saw this stain on the bench that looked a bit like New Zealand (or maybe the Andaman Is.) and got pretty excited..but alas, someone sat on the stain and carried the map off on the seat of their pants. Templar treasure lost forever!
Freemason Lodge, Bangalore!

Can this stain be a map?

Did the Templars make it to Bangalore?

Adi and Mother's Day

He has a masterful knowledge of life and a healthy dose of cynicism. He did not get drawn a whole lot into the hoopla, but before going to bed, he came downstairs and gave me a kiss. I asked him why, and he said "because you are my mommy and today is mother's day". I said, "Well, I will be your mom every day, so every day is mother's day".
He thought for a second, and said " well, for most of my life, you will be my mommy". I asked him why most of his life? He says, "well, when I am as old as you are, you will be old by that time, and when I get a little older, you might die. So, you probably won't be  my mommy for my whole life". Oh, the dilemma. To laugh or to cry!!!!!!!!!!!

So, here I go---

Redwood Regional Park Hike

Today found us hiking in the Oakland hills near the Chabot Space Center. We went to hike under the giant California redwood trees in the Redwood regional park.

Our hike started at the middle of the West Ridge and we climbed to the peak for a gorgeous view of the Oakland hills and gorges. We then hiked down to the canyon floor to the background music of bird calls and the bubbling redwood creek water, punctuated only by the occasional barks of dogs chasing the birds.

The walk down was very cool and pleasant under a canopy of giant redwood trees. We found a few more Bay trees, ferns, pines, Madrones and Eucalyptus along the way.  The canyon floor was picturesque and serene and the redwood trees towered straight into the sky. A great spot for a picnic or an overnight camp. We met a troop of boy scouts on their way for camping.

This also was a 3.6 mile hike, but a lot more strenuous that last week. Only parts of the trail were flat, and a large portion of the hike was over rocks, tree roots and uneven ground. Aditya once again exceeded our expectations. Although he started complaining a little towards the end about his legs hurting as we started the hike back up from the Canyon floor, he stoically pushed ahead and completed the hike.

AP CM killed in 'copter crash

A.P. is Andhra Pradesh and now Arunachal pradesh.
bad weather,  losing contact with base soon after take off etc. are all the same.
One CM, One aide and one passenger + 2 pilots in both crashes.
where is Khanndu's son? Why is he not clamouring for being made the CM?

Soda instead of milk

When we go to restaurants, I order Soda for Aditya instead of Milk. If I order milk, he will fill his tummy with it and not eat the food. He doesn't like Pepsi, Lemonade etc a whole lot and won't drink much. So I just order a soda. He is happy, I am happy.

I am probably the only mom who prefers to order soda instead of milk for their kids.

I am actually quite amazed at his eating habits. He eats quite healthy for a kid growing up in the junk food world. He doesn't like sodas, doesn't eat much chocolate, doesn't eat any cookies except "homemade chocolate chip" and an occasional Oreo, doesn't like pizzas or french fries, doesn't eat burgers or sandwiches, doesn't like cakes and pastries ( except Passage to India bakery eggless cakes which are less sweet and very airy), doesn't drink sugary fruit juices, or eat sugary cereals and doesn't like creamy ice creams. His only "vice" is his weekly Friday night McDonalds dinner.

He likes Popsicles ( icefruits in India), healthy cereals like cheerios, raw carrots,  strawberries dipped in gourmet chocolate, grapes,  oranges, pappu annam with ghee, beans, beets, bendakai,  dondakai, bananas, perugu annam, yogurt and milk, milk, milk, milk, milk, milk.

He actually has a very refined palate and can distinguish even subtle tastes. I gave him two oroe cookies one from an old batch and one new. Srinivas and I also ate them and did not find much difference, but he was able to distinguish which was old and which was new. He is sooooooooooooo picky with his food, he reminds me of Nanna all the time. Just like Nanna, he eats only a limited set of high quality foods ( home made cookies, waffles ; gourmet chocolate, just ripe fruits, home cooked chappaties).

On one side, its great to see him eating healthy, but his limited preferences make it hard to feed him.

Russian Ridge Hike

This Saturday found us exploring the spring wildflowers in full bloom at the Russian ridge preserve in San Mateo. It was a 3.6 mile (5.75 km) trail over a non-paved uphill and downhill walk. We started at an elevation of about 2200 feet and climbed up to 2757 feet, before coming back down.

The views from up there were stunning, with the entire bay area and the pacific ocean laid out in front of us. We walked through ancient oak groves and plucked bay leaves ( tej patta / biryani leaf) off the Bay trees. We saw a wild deer, a coyote and a wild turkey cross our paths. The sometimes heavy, but mostly gentle winds buffeted us as we climbed up and down. The undulating grassy plains were a sight to see.

The reserve was vast and often times we had the entire trail just for us. Aditya held up well to the challenge. Jabbering non-stop, he was quite enthusiastic about the hike, and exhilarated at the prospect of meeting a mountain lion. Fortunately for the parents' peace of mind, we encountered no wild cats.

Here is the entire description of the hike. http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/russianridge.html
