Earth Hour 2011

Like last year we decided to participate in Earth Hour this Saturday past. For an hour, we are supposed to switch off all things electric and find something rewarding to. It is hard to figure how such initiatives help, but no harm done anyhow.

Participants: Poonam was the prominent absentee this time. We met up at Anu and Niru's (cousins from amma's side) place,  who were the other enthusiasts from last year. Thier mother, Nalini aunty was also part of it this time. We were joined by Varun and Vandana, friends of Anu.

Highlights: In keeping with the theme, the food was organic and the recipes did not require cooking by gas. The menu was a mixed veg salad, poha (no cooking),  a poha+jaggery dessert and jal jeera (a digestive drink).

After general chit chat, Varun, an accomplished guitarist, played a couple of songs. And then he suggested that we compose a song for the ocassion. An hour later, we actually had a fairly decent song going! I am posting the lyrics and the song video below. The video is grainy but the sound should be ok- recommend using earphones for better clarity.

By the time we were done, we had spent about 2 hours without electricity...so mission accomplished.

Lyrics:

Lets make an Earth Hour
to remember
from January
to December

Candlelight
aint just about romance
we switched off
gave Earth a chance

It was our way
of getting together
and contributing
To make it better

Our food
was made without LPG
the Earth is now
a little more Carbon-free

Notes of honey
emanate from wood
and make the evening
sound so good

It was our way
of getting together
and contributing
to make it better

The Earth hour
is just a stepping stone
one day a green Earth
we'll claim as our own...

(Chorus):

Lets make it greener
Lets make it better

Lets make it greener
Lets make it better

Lets make it greener
Lets make it better

Lets make it greener
Lets make it better...

NEW ARRIVAL

Next generation No. 2 is here. Arjun Singampalli was born on 26th march 2011 at 3.42 pm IST.

I am my own grandpa

Today Aditya was singing a poem about how a person through a series of legal circumstances becomes his own grandpa.
http://www.mamarocks.com/i_am_my_own_grandpa.htm
Essentially, he marries a widow with a grown up daughter and the daughter marries his dad.

The icing on the cake was the following question and his own subsequent answer.

" But Amma, if his dad is old, how can he remarry? He won't have enough sperm to make babies." After a few minutes of stunned silence from the both of us, " I guess they fertilize the egg outside".

I have NO IDEA how he knows this............I am still in shock.

Dragon Mother???

It was all the rage a couple of months ago. An article by a Chinese professor about the superiority of Chinese parenting styles over the american style raised a fire storm with articles, comments, counter comments and spoof videos.

Here is a link to the article. I will post more about my philosophy to child rearing for a healthy debate on the family forum, especially considering the new parents and parents to be.....

My uncle Ramaiah

A REQUIEM
Though not a song, it is from my heart.
The phone rings and a voice says in a drawl “Narsimmaa!” and I know who it is!
It may be for a consultation, it may be for a bit of advice (asked for or given), it may be for the purpose of expressing concern about himself or others—but always it will be full of affection-unmistakable.
I remember the days when I was a child and he used to visit Kavali in summer. We used to go out and take walks in the railway station. When he left, we, the kids, were richer by the princely sum of a rupee each.
When we visited Tirupati in the summer holidays, same routine—go for walks and visit the railway station in the evenings. We were given ice-creams and cool drinks in Welcome Cool Drinks or in Royal Cool Drinks.
He took me to Bangalore to attend an interview at the IISc for the National Talent Search Examination, he was present for my Jipmer interview and he was present for my interview in the Pondicherry government service, he was always there when I was doing MD in Tirupati, he was there for me when I underwent Surgery in SVIMS, he was there for Gouri when she was pregnant and he was there for my daughter’s study and marriage. He was always there for me.
He always doted on Subbaiah and was affectionate towards Rangaiah--Sarada, Gopal, Viswam and the rest were always loved by him.
His love and obedience towards his Bava and Akka were infinite.
This family was his.
Always smiling, ever happy and never angry. That was him.
I never saw him angry or bitter. I never saw him sad either. He had a belief in the Lord that sustained him and made him forgive even his detractors.
Always fond of people and always inviting people to come and not worry about the inconvenience or expense to self. Many are my friends and Kuppi’s friends who came, saw and were conquered.
A great man and a great soul.
I miss him but as the poet Donne said
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."
It tolled for him and it tolled for me.
I am certainly diminished by it.
