General opinion abour AR Rahman's music is that it grows on you after listening many times. Initially I did not like it much. I could not catch up the tunes, but after a while I liked it a lot.
This is about his recent music album (Tamil movie called 'Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya?', in Telugu: Ye Maaya Chesave).
The music is unconventional(some of the songs)in the way that it doesn't follow the regular indian music style of pallavi, anu pallavi, charanam...
But really loved the fusion work. Beautiful blend of western instruments(mainly Guitar) with some of the indian instruments(e.g Naadhaswaram and shenoy).
I guess coz he is a trained musician in all three(western/carnatic/hindustani) classical music, he is able to do it to the perfection.
It's a love story where boy is a Hindu Tamilian(or Telugu), and girl is a Malayalee Christian. A splendid work in expressing both Christian and Hindu marriage chords at right places.
One the song called 'Aaromale' is Psychedelic rock with a touch of Country blues but with a Hindustani base, with malayalam lyrics(sounds much like sanskrit though..) (sources from wiki)
The album is a huge hit in south metros, hence wanted to share it with the family...
Enjoyy maadi !!

Fusion music...
I recently found this artist's albums in youtube while I was searching for
carnatic, fusion type music. He is Sri V.S. Narasimhan. He is very well known for his violin work for the album 'How to name it' and 'Nothing but winds' by Illayaraja.
His recent albums are of fusion nature(Carnatic Classical and Western classicals).
I recently listened to his latest album called 'Raga Saga'. The blend of Carnatic and Western classical is just divine. Being an ardent carntic music lover, I was able to truly enjoy and appreciate fusion music. Primary instruments being used are viola, violin, and few other Western instruments.
Worth a try listening...
