Election 2009
But it seems as if Democracy is on the path for a win.
Most of the people went and voted. Apathy is a thing of the past.
Many women from middle class, many educated and employed, many many youth have voted and expressed themselves (from the tv visuals).
Is AP voter waking up?
And whom have they all favored?
A high 67.8% vote bodes ill for the ruling party.
But YSR had put in a lot of good work and so did they turn out and vote for him?
Or did Babu impress them with the CTS?
Or did they want the CHANGE promised by Chiru?
Loksatta did get into their minds with their promise of a clean govt?
One thing I'm sure is that the independents, party rebels and BJP are largely irrelevant.
MPs? GOK.

Pass available to hear Warren Buffett speak
I have a single student pass that gives access to the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in Omaha. Considering the fact that the Class A-share(BRKA) costs about $88,000+ and the Class B-share (BRKB) costs about $3,000, this is a rare free opportunity to attend the meeting and hear Mr.Buffett speak. The meeting is on May 2nd, Saturday. Let me know if you want the pass and I can fed-ex it over ASAP.
After hearing him speak in November, I can tell you it is an absolutely amazing experience. You can read my blog entry about my experience here.

Behind every successful woman
A day of triumph
Our team picked my idea, but our team consisted of 4 "engineers" who had no idea about the business side of things and me. And our project was NOT moving forward and sometimes even regressing. As late as two weeks ago, we were in such bad shape that our advisor thought it needed divine intervention for us to complete this project to a reasonable level.
So I decided to take charge two weeks ago, emailed our professor to request for a chance to present in class, vastly raising the stakes in embarrassment and took over the creation of the powerpoint slide deck, which entailed refining our business model to extreme levels. I also paid a guy to do a mockup of our site. We worked Saturday from 1PM to 1AM, with me pushing to get it done and I worked on the slide deck sunday night, took ownership of presenting the first part of explaining the business which the most crucial role since this sets the tone for the entire presentation and practiced the heck out of it, in the shower, in front of a mirror, in front IS, to a level where I was comfortable, scripted up what the rest of the team should say, got them to practice and delivered it tonight.
It was a spectacular success and the rest of the advisors who were hearing from our advisor on how bad we were, just sat there, simply stunned. Of course they had lot of feedback, but overall were quite impressed.
In fact, a guest in our class, the CEO of a Venture Capital firm( who was employee number 5-6 in Oracle ) pulled me aside after the class and told me, and I quote, " You have great leadership potential and you can go places". He complimented me on my presentation style, and again I quote "a relaxed, unassuming manner that hides a lot of knowledge", and a "great presence" ( which was funny, considering I am under 5 feet :-) and told my professor "This is a very talented young lady". Apparently he was quite impressed with how I was not intimidated during the private feedback session he and another VC guest gave our team and how I was able to calmly respond.
It was a great feeling that made all the effort in the last week totally worth it. Amma and Nanna know how I was so disgusted with our performance two weeks ago but today I am on Cloud Nine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A treasure hunt
HP question: In the Deathly Hallows, what is the epitaph on Arianna Dumbledore's grave?
Answer: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (for the uninitiated, Arianna is Dumbledore's sister who dies in an accident that Dumbledore blames himself for).
The phrase was not clear to me at the time I read the book…but more about that later.
Hind Swaraj: I was reading 'Hind Swaraj' by Gandhi the other day. Of the writings of Gandhi, this is unique. It is the only work that he had himself translated into English from Gujarati- in that sense, the English reader is so much more privy to Gandhiji's thoughts (even his autobiography is a translation by his secretary, Mahadev Desai).
Also, it was written on the ship 'Kildonan Castle' on the way to India from South Africa, just before he got into the thick of the Indian independence movement - so it was a sort of a vision statement that he implemented to such effect in the subsequent 40 years. The clarity of his thought was so high that he wrote it at a stretch on the ship's paper. When his right hand ached from writing, he wrote 40 pages with his left hand. Only 6-7 lines were scratched out in those 100 odd pages.
The work expounds on the principles of passive resistance, and the use of soul power (atmabalam) than physical force to get Swaraj. One of his major influences was Leo Tolstoy, whose non-fiction magnum opus, 'The Kingdom of God is within you' germinated the seed of this principle of non-violence in Gandhiji's mind. The book is listed as one of the references by Gandhi in the post script of Hind Swaraj.
'The Kingdom of God is within you’: So I looked up the book in Wikipedia. The gist is that Tolstoy attributes the problems of the Western world to its neglect of true Christian principles. He blames the Church & society for war-mongering and misinterpreting the essential teachings of Christ. (This was also one of Gandhi’s major assertions: the British are not a bad people per se, it is just that they have abandoned a Christian civilization: as much as he urges India to give up ‘modern’ civilization, so much does he urge the British to go back to Christian roots).
The title of the book itself is from the 'sermon on the mount', which is by far the most famous of Jesus’ teachings. This is the speech in which Christ tells the world to turn the other cheek, love thy neighbor etc- all the essentials of pacifism, and is the inspiration for Tolstoy’s work.
Sermon on the Mount: So I then decided to read the Sermon on the Mount (it was not a very busy Sunday). As one might expect, it is a very powerful sermon, especially if one imagines the harsh Roman, eye-for-an-eye philosophy of the times. 'Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth'. 'Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven'. 'love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you....For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? '
As I was reading through it, I came upon this section:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;
No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and wealth.
for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also"
Well, there it was! It was a pleasant surprise, like meeting an old friend unexpectedly. The meaning of the epitaph was now clear. Dumbledore could not serve the 2 masters: wealth (the Hallows) and his duties (Arianna). If you care for wealth, your heart will also rest there and is not available for your duties. He tried to serve both masters and failed, and the epitaph was an admonition to himself not to fail again like that.
Thus, my literary treasure hunt yielded an unexpected nugget!

VIDYA'S MARRIAGE
Sarma tatagaru at his vintage best and ammamma at her silent best.
SBD the silent bee but forced to eat in the first or second batch. In this connection some people were even given prizes for dragging her (literally) for lunch. Krups and Poonam made a lightning visit. Of course, Poonam announced her presence empahtically by directing things on stage. Sasi and Madhu were there, were not there and were there. Wonder why Sasi is showing this prowess of disapperaing and reappering during marriages!!
Me and Gouri, more spectators than helpers due to limitations, tho I did have an occasion to show off my Linguistic Abilities and Gouri entertained Kavali guests and led them to breakfast.
What to say about SRN and SKD? Harassed? Tired? Happy? Relieved? all of them. A good job well done!
Kanth and friends-good work.
Sarada and bavagaru registerd their presence--Sarada by a tiff with SRN and then settling down nicely and helpfully ( as is usual). bava garu being in charge of the KEYS of the strong box (Once a bank manager, always a bank manager)
Gopal--silent and observant (see his wodehousean masterpiece about JADA-GADA)
Vijaya liaising efficiently with caterers, manager and the music party.
SVN and his "cheviti machine" have already starred in these columns. Then he did a wonderful job of looking after the breakfast business. Only thing was that one had to be on constant guard (unsuccessfully) to keep him away from----what else---sweets.
Padma in charge of the arrangements, sardatam and THE BOX. Solid worker and no pun intended.
Summi gadu, the lone warrior, was worked off her feet. Kudos for her tireless work and ever- present smile.
Swathi was not her usual self-quiet and was busy with the cell phone on day one and looking lost on the other days.( charger was broken and so no cell phone)
Ramesh, Durga, Subrahmanyam, Ramadevi, Sravan, Venu, Subbalakshmi, Suhrud and Manyu were present and participated well.
Mr.Ramesh was great and without him it would have been very very difficult.
Varamma, Pullaiah, Bujjamma etc. were of great help.
The Pydighantams were present in force and were appreciative.
The bridegroom's party were really great. They were so cooperative, it went off so smoothly that it really was unbelievable. Madhavan, Kamala and Raghavendrarao garu and the rest were nice and if all the future grooms' parties are like that, we will be very very blessed and happy.
Vidya, the star, was tired by the end of it all but I believe she is happy and so are we.
viswam babai at his best
vidya:nanna i want a poola jada.
viswam: why gada ? who wants gada? (bamboo pole).
srn : its not gada. jada.vidya wants it.
viswam : (without removing earphones)thats what iam asking.i can arrange a gada. but why gada ?
srn :please stop .its jada.
viswam : i just cant understand who is asking. who is the dommari who wants to dance with a gada on a wire. stupid thing to ask or to do.
srn : ( pulls the earphones). poola jada ,jada, jada. see this. it has come. and if i catch you with earphones during the entire marriage period ------
viswam: ok .its a poola jada. why are you angry for such a small matter.i was only trying to help by arranging a gada. (afterthought) though its a stupid thing to do.
everybody is in fits.festivity and atmosphere have fully set in.

Congrats Lavy
lavy has a lot of hidden talent(dark horse)
vijaya is on a chariot on cloud(jalada) nine (nava) and lavy is the flag of this high flying chariot
gopal is never the one to boast of his kids' talents and the fragrance of that pride is hidden in his heart
lavy is the delicate climber with the full blown flowers of education and achievement.( living upto her name )
A question of talent
At poetic talent prodigous in my kin
Enjoyment followed with a second or third rumination
Expectations rose as the reality sank in
But with delicate thoughts and words of choice
With equal facility in many tongues
The ever-rising bar leaves me dumb, deviod of voice
So I wonder, does this ladder of creativity never run out of rungs?
But now, past the surprise and the praise
Struggling with scratchy pen and wordless, dry-lipped,
Questions many my mind raise:
Why this skill, a generation has skipped?
Why, we junior Singampallis, to a lower standard, have to settle?
Why, dear babais atthas and pinnis, have you not sought to transfer
With alacrity, to your scions, your linguistic mettle?
To this, I now respectfully demand an answer!
