LOSING BATTLE

When I see myself in mirror do I find Alfred Hitchcock with his nice chin. May be I am great .Or do I see Nagam(biyyam) Janardana Reddy? I hate my self.In a Letter  to Durga who has gone to Tenali to deliver Vidya, I was lamenting about weight increase from kg 62 to 68,because of scooter.Now 4 years  after coming to Hyderabad my weight increased from a steady72 to 84 .Great efforts
Like giving up sweets(of course partially), walking ,taking buttermilk instead of curd  I am now76.Dr Vijayakumar of Vijaya nursing home,Cheennai, says you must maintain 60 kg  for your height.  SLN,SGR always chide me.
    why people who eat heftily ,keep slim,where as even a small indulgence increases  weight is a great mystery.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,   
But I have promises to keep,   
And miles to go before I sleep,   
And miles to go before I sleep.

BRTS

Neeraj bhaiyya (Neeraj Tripathi - poonam bhabhi's brother - for those who don't already know) recently posted a video on facebook about BRT (bus rapid transit)

I think the idea behind the post was to educate people about public transit and its benefits and how the government should take up projects like this for the welfare of the public. In all the past debates -  on this blog, other forums and discussion boards etc - i've noticed that the two sides of the coin in this case are ,more often than not, two questions - the government? the people? The chicken or the egg? We always end the debate leaving matters hanging (i would say).

But this time for a change can we identify the culprit?

The Indian government has in fact taken up this endeavor.

 When I was in Indore, I did see a special lane for what were called special buses. The purpose of the BRT(bus rapid transit) lane was to facilitate such buses to move rapidly through the city traffic and get people to their destinations hassle - free. They had extra space  in the lane and facilities in the bus to make things easy for physically handicapped people. They had special buses for women. They had enough buses going to every place in the city (especially the office hubs) , so that buses never needed to be extra crowded. They took care of technicalities - buses were more frequent during peak hours.

The program launched.

I do not exactly know when - but a while later ...
Social activists filed petitions about the problems the lanes were causing (yes the bad parts were noticed).
The government started allowing 4 wheelers  to travel along with the buses in the lane.
Why? Most likely the other city lanes were getting over crowded as people still used their own means of transport to get to where they wanted to. These buses lost their flair.


What went wrong? I don't know.. Do you have any thoughts?

P.S. I didn't do a lot of research, but there is a good chance that google knows the answer. 'BRT Indore'/'BRT India' is what you need to type.... 
I am in Boy Scouts and it is pretty cool. I am just trying to get the geologist pin so I can get the Arrow of Light. Two of my school friends are also in Boy Scouts: Jeet and Anush. :-) We play pranks on each other and also always group together whenever we are doing plays. One example is this play: THE WIPER. Scout 1: Run, Run! Scout 2: The Viper is coming! The Viper is coming! Scout 3: I am ze Viper! Need a vipe? Scout 4: Hey, have you guys seen the toilet paper? THE END

SCHOOL, SCHOOL, SCHOOL

Hi everybody! This is a nice blog and I also want to start writing here!

Well, school is almost out J! My friends are all talking about what they are going to do during summer. The newest fad in school is Minecraft. I also play this game and it is very nice. It is a building game in which you have two choices before you start: Survival, in which you start with no items and have to survive monster attacks during the night, or Creative mode, in which you are invincible and start off with everything and some things you cannot get in Survival mode. Enough about Minecraft though, it is time to keep talking about school. Right now I have a Young Authors story writing. I have to write a story that is uniquely my own. Right now I have finished what I have to do at home. The rest is to do at school. I just finished standardized testing and everything is a little more fun now that there isn’t the shadow of standardized testing later on in the year. Ha ha ha J. It is kind of sad to not be able to talk to friends until I get recess and also I cannot talk to my friends in other classes until lunch recess L. School is fun and during recess we are now playing baseball and it is so hard! I am never able to hit the ball and when I do it is always caught L! Gotcha, didn’t I? It is actually easy to hit the ball and I hit it so hard I can always hit it hard enough to run all the bases    :-) !

Hello Hybris!

Tomorrow marks my Day 1 as Director of PM, Cross-Solution Initiatives at Hybris. As the saying goes, everything happens for our own good (antha mana manchike).

When Magento decided to close it's San Jose office, that forced me out of my comfort zone to look for a new opportunity, that led to a career level promotion. Had I stayed at eBay, it might have taken me a year or two to get that.

Excited about the role, and it's kicking off with a quick round of travel, Munich to meet the development team, Montreal to meet my own team and Chicago to meet our customers. I should be well setup to start the "real work" :-) after these meetings.

Onward to Mars-(Fingers Crossed)

 Chennai: Cruising towards a historic feat, the Indian space mission to Mars today crossed half the total distance to the red planet from Earth and was very much along the designated helio-centric trajectory.

At exactly 09.50 am (IST), the Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft crossed the mid-point of its path to Mars, thereby has travelled 337.5 million km in its elliptical orbit around the sun, ISRO sources said.

It took four minutes and 15 seconds for a message to reach the spacecraft and return, they said.
The mission was very much in track and it was evident with the fact that the second Trajectory Correction Manouvre (TCM) planned on the spacecraft has now been considered not necessary and is expected to be performed only in June, scientists said.
Of the four TCMs planned on the spacecraft, the first was performed on December 10 last year and the remaining are scheduled in June, August and September, respectively.

Indias maiden mission to Mars was successfully launched on board PSLV C 25 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota spaceport, some 100 km from here, on November 5 last year.
Of the total 51 missions undertaken to Mars (excluding MOM), only 21 have been successful.

If all goes well and the satellite orbits around Mars, IndiaҒs national space agency ISRO would be the fourth after agencies in US, Russia and Europe to have undertaken a successful mission to the red planet. Attempts by China and Japan to send missions to Mars have failed.

Aditya was working on his Maths problems and there was a question, what is the sum of first 100 numbers? He quickly answered 5050. I asked him how he arrived at this number so quickly. He gave a beautiful explanation (of course he does not know the "formula") as to how he calculated it. Any one care to guess what it is? (Ranga Babai is banned from answering :-) )

The Fortitude of ISRO

All of you must have seen the telecasts and photos of the " 25th Successive, Successful  launch of PSLV" as stated by Radhakrishnan.
But many of you may not know the humble beginnings. So, here goes----



Humble Beginnings for a Great Success
Though India today is considered as one of the prominent countries conducting many space activities, the Indian space program began in a modest way with the formation of the Indian National Committee on Space Research by the Government of India in
1962.
The program formally began on November 21, 1963 with the launch of a 28 feet long American ‘Nike-Apache’ Sounding Rocket from Thumba, near Thiruvananthapuram. It carried a small French payload (scientific instrument) to study the winds in the upper atmosphere. [Sounding rockets are small research rockets that carry instruments to study upper atmosphere and space. They cannot launch satellites].

The Event
It is 21th November 1963. A beautiful day with clear skies. History is about to be created at the small coastal village of Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram. A bicycle carrying a cone-shaped device trundles onto the sandy beach.
A small team of budding scientists soon gets down to business. Among them a frail young man with long hair.  A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who later went on to achieve great distinction and become the President of India. Another local boy watches the launch several kilometers away from the terrace of the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram--The future ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair and advisor to various strategic projects.
The newly built rocket launching pad was set on the beach, a clearing in the midst of coconut groves. A local Catholic church, the St Mary Magdalene’s Church served as the main office for the scientists.  The small place of worship became the mainstay for the team of rocket scientists, including A P J Abdul Kalam. The first drawings of some of the earliest rockets were made in this church, now a space museum.  The bishop’s house was converted into a workshop.  A cattle shed became the laboratory in which the young Indian scientists worked on the first sounding rockets. Scientists travelled daily from Thiruvananthapuram in buses, carrying lunch bought at the railway station.  Many rocket parts were carried by the scientists on bicycles from one place to another within the sprawling range of Thumba.

WHEN the orange trail lit up the twilight sky over the fishing village of Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram on November 21, 1963, there was excitement in Kerala and the neighboring districts in Tamil Nadu. The Kerala Legislative Assembly was adjourned for a few minutes so that the members could watch the glorious spectacle left behind in the western sky by the Nike Apache rocket, which was imported from the United States. The two-stage rocket, weighing 715 kg and powered by solid propellants, climbed to an altitude of 208 km, releasing sodium vapor that lit up the sky. The seeds of India's modern rocketry program had been sown.
NEXT
The first experimental flight of SLV-3, in August 1979, was only partially successful.
Satellite Launch Vehicle-3 (SLV-3), India's first experimental satellite launch vehicle was successfully launched on July 18, 1980 from SHAR Centre Sriharikota, when Rohini satellite, RS-1, was placed in orbit. SLV-3 was a 22 m long, all solid, four stage vehicle weighing 17 tonnes capable of placing 40 kg class payloads in low earth orbit.
It employed an open loop guidance (with stored pitch program) to steer the vehicle in flight along pre-determined trajectory.
Apart from the July 1980 launch, there were two more launches held in May 1981 and April 1983, orbiting Rohini satellites carrying remote sensing sensors.

The Failure and the partial Success (failure)

On September 20, 1993 a PSLV-D1, the first developmental flight, rocket failed during launch. A significant attitude disturbance occurred during second to third-stage separation, causing the attitude control command to exceed its maximum value. The vehicle crashed into the Bay of Bengal 700 seconds after takeoff.

On September 29, 1997 a PSLV-C1 rocket has failed during launch.
The fourth stage was shut down by a software override timer after burning 435 s, before reaching the target orbit or depleting propellant. The injection velocity was 140 m/s low, resulting in orbit 301x823 km instead of the planned 817 km circular SSO. Initially, a leak of helium gas from one of the components in the fourth stage was suspected, similar to recent Long March 3 launch failure, but later ruled out. Resulted orbit was partially corrected using satellite on-board thrusters, thereby raising the perigee to 737 km, while the apogee remained at 821 km.
