Pity the poor kids
1. Swathi---in Rigorous Imprisonment.
2. Lavanya--presumably busy with INTERNALS, MIDS or whatever u call it. What little time is left is not enough for a chat with a friend or a circuit of ORKUT. Anyway, she reads the blog, don't she? THAT also is participation.
3. Sumana--vide supra.
4. Manasa--vide supra.
5. Mrudula--vide supra. May be a few functions also strain her.
6. Srikanth--Busy preparing for exams and busy polishing his (soft)wares. We miss his excellent-"from the heart" poetry.
7. Vidya--never an enthusiastic blogger--the true American with concerns for privacy--Joking! too busy with tighteneder schedule.(already tight--tightened and now more tightened--how do you like the new word I coined. does it convey full meaning?)
8. Sudha--too busy being lazy. No time left for anything else.
9. SSV--Well, "cricket anyone--let's come on!" joking again--too busy a schedule.
10. SLK--active and the life and soul of the party.
11. IS--the silent strong man.
12. SASI--vide supra.
13. Poonam--we miss her art though she is very nicely demonstrating the science of commenting without posting.
14. Krupakar--active and the life and soul of the party.

My List
The title sounds a bit like Microsoft!:)
It is a tough task to narrow things down to 10. Let me try.
A few observations first.
1.Of all the Rasas Karuna is the one that is felt more easily and is the one that comes out quicker than other emotions. (It is rooted in the fact that empathy is a group response and all animals find survival is better in a group. Only predators go about separately.)That is why tragedies and sacrifices make lasting impressions-be it movies, novels, epics or real life.
2.Literature (and literary characters)also follow the same rule and Literature should give us a better understanding of the people around us and the society as a whole. So, more tragic heroes and fewer comical ones. Still eternal optimists, those that never give up, idealists also should form an important part. Alistair Maclean or Sydney Sheldon and the rest of that ilk are interesting to read but will not form a lasting impression on the mind.
So here goes-- as Krupa says. in no particular order.
1. Sydney Carton -- A tale of Two Cities
He goes to his death cheerfully to save the husband of the woman whom he loved. A woman, who goes to the tumbril with him, recognises that he is not Darnay and asks him why he is losing his life like that. His sacrifice gives her courage and she goes to her death with the head held high. That is the value of a sacrifice--that it inspires the others.
2. At the risk of blasphemy--Lucifer. Don't you think there is logic in his arguments?
3.Hamlet--the confused man and Macbeth the victim of his own and wife's greed.
4.The Man in Black--see Gouri's explanation.
5. And Yes!!! Lord Emsworth, the dotty peer.
6. Hank Rearden, who knows his strengths and yet is willing to be exploited by sentiment--you see this in several elder members of the families. Youngsters have all the rights and no responsibilities. I feel John Galt is a bit too practical.
7. For pure horror--Dracula
8. for pure deductive reasoning--which is essential in any field of constructive action--Who else--It is Sherlock Holmes.
9.For applying Psychology--not Jeeves but Miss Marple who studies the village life and from it deduces human nature and the culprits. Yet she is human. In one book she rushes for a sale to buy bedspreads and manages to buy things in the (c)rush.
10. As a doctor I have seen it happen to several greats and I always feel " but for the grace of God, there go I" and hence we always run to keep up with the latest trends--- Dr. Joseph Pearson in Final Diagnosis.

My top 10
These are the characters that made a lasting impression on me. I remember these characters off and on in some context or other, even when I have not read those books in a while.
These are in no particular order of importance.

My top 10!
OK, singular lack of interest all round, it seems :) Anyway, here is my quick 10. I thought these were the most complex, most consistent and most entertaining characters that I had read so far.
1. Albus Dumbledore
2. Lord Elmsworth
3. Sherlock Holmes
4. Long John Silver
5. Severus Snape
6. Bertie Wooster
7. Arthur Dent (bumbling Englishman tripping through time and space, completelty out of his depth: from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams)
8. Dirk Gently (a detective who believes in the fundamental interconnection of everything in the universe and thus tries to solve cases in a 'wholistic' manner. Created by Douglas Adams)
9. Captain Hastings (another bumbling Englishman!)

The CDC Call
So apparently, CDC decided to do a "follow-up survey" on whether I got sick from the "norovirus" they identified as the cause of the sickness. Well, I did not, so I am not dying yet, but I gave CDC a piece of my mind as to how they should leave the message. Something better than "Contact Investigation", which can scare the bejeesus out of people.
Opinion Poll: Top 10 Characters in Literature
Apart from birthday greetings, literature is something that obviously animates most of the Singampallis. So how about a poll of the top 10 characters in literature? Since the choice is vast, we could lay down some ground rules for ease of selection:
1. Only English literature (sorry senior Singampallis, juniors not read enough Telugu literature :-( )
2. Only from novels or short stories(not comics or animation)
3. If you cant think of all 10 characters, anything lesser would also do.
4. Most Important: All Singampallis should contribute (yes, I know- that is wishful thinking:))
5. Poll closes in one week (or till everyone votes :))
6. Ok that is it...I cant make up any more ground rules...and feel free to break all above rules too :)
At the end, we will count the votes and identify the Ultimate Singampalli Top 10!!!

A scary message
I come home from class Monday night, and Srinivas tells me the Center for Disease Control (CDC) called.
I was on this horrible trip from Boston to Los Angeles 2 weeks ago, where 12 passengers on the plane I was traveling got sick with vomiting and diarrhea. Our plane got diverted to Chicago, where we were put on another plane to LA, and I ended up missing my San Jose connecting flight and flew back the next morning after staying in LA.

So what really happened? Am I sick? Am I dying? Why is CDC calling me?

Oh where, Oh where have the posters gone, oh where oh where are they?
To be sung to the tune of "Oh where Oh where has the little dog gone? Oh where Oh where is he? With his ears cut short and his tail cut long, oh where oh where is he?" Kids could be so cruel. I never understood the three blind mice rhyme( They all ran after the farmer's wife, who cut of their tails with a carving knife, did you ever see such a sorry sight?)
I challenge someone to decipher the barrage of initials.

A chance to meet the richest american, but more importantly a great man

According to Reuters, Warren Buffet is currently the richest american, booting Bill Gates off the charts. But more importantly he is one of the world's successful investors, noted for his philosophy of value-investing, investing in companies with good performance rather than airy hype. Known as "Oracle of Omaha", he still lives in the house he bought in 1958 for $32,000 ( current value $500,000, less than the median house price in Bay area) in Omaha, Nebraska and drives his own car, a Cadillac. He donated $30.7 Billion to the Bill Gates foundation, largest charitable donation in history. A charity auction for lunch with him sold for $650,000.
Along with 26 other students from Haas School of Business, I will be traveling to Omaha on November 21st to meet this great man in person for a two-hour lunch and Q&A session.
I am looking forward to it.
