Poonam and I went to Valley school again today for birding. The highlight of the trip was the rescue of a baby terrapin (a tortoise with a tail)- we saw it plodding along a dry path, so we took it to the nearest pond. We also saw a family of Scops Owls in an old and gnarled tamarind tree. The Indian Roller also gave a stellar areal performance, showing off its bright colors. This is apparently the official bird of Karnataka and AP! The list of birds we saw:
- Red whiskered Bulbul
- Red Vented Bulbul
- Indian Robin (Male and Female)
- Oriental Magpie Robin

Nice pics anna,... I think I remember seeing the Indian roller several times in the countryside, or in childhood. What is it called in telugu?
And why not try photographing some yourself? With a high resolution digi camera, I find we can get reasonably good pics... It is a task requiring quite a bit of talent & delicacy (as we found out in the Kavali thota!), but quite rewarding I would think...
Indian Roller=Pala Pitta, apparently. You are bound to have seen it- it is quite common outside city limits.
Shashi bhaiya, it seems you really need those big bazooka kind lenses and expensive cameras to get good pics. There are lot of nature photographers who come along for bird watching with us, and they are very patient to catch perfect pose(quite a difficult task). Next time we you come here, you gotto go for one of the bird watching trips with Krups, I bet you will love it!
