Bommala Koluvu

A dying tradition. Many of the kids are unaware of what it means. What a pity! WE enjoyed it hugely and we think all the Perantallu and kids also did.We had several uninvited boy kids and men visiting to see it.
See here--Koluvu.

ps: Madhav! don't you do it at Chennai? I am sure you do. Share a few memories

Nice pics Uncle.

Yes, we do celebrate in Chennai. I was fortunate enough to observe many southern traditions at one single place. We have Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalis, Tulu, Konkani people visiting our home during every dasara period.
Have tasted so many varieties of Sundal and other bakshanams :)
Have enjoyed purandara dasas padagalu, thyagaraja kritis, Devi kritis, bharathiyar paadalgal, meera bhai bajan songs etc.

Since we had only one room(actually that's also hall), sometimes it'll be pretty full with almost 10-15 ladies/kids, my mom use to say "Maadhu..go and study in grandpas room.."

My mom and sister would dress tradionally and goto every known house in our colony to invite people to our home. Sometimes due to time crunch, they will split their area of visit. Mom will say "Kamala(my sister) you goto chaintanya's home side and cover all, I'll goto paattu class(music teacher) maami house". Sometimes(when i was like < 8yrs ) I too use to go with my sister and invite everyone.

Our neighbours were paalakad iyers, and during dasara, they use to make the best Paal(milk) payasam and also had the best kolu(dolls) with almost 8 to 10 steps.

As a kid, my favourite was seting up the Park, arranging sand, sprouts, some animal dolls etc..

Even now at my home back in Chennai, my parents have arranged dolls, and have invited many people.

I still remember and cherish every bit of the celebration..
