How does one go about writing a short series?
Start from the beginning--proceed chronologically--and leave the end open!--for a Sequel.
or
Start in the middle--go for a flashback--come back and finish.
or
start in the middle--proceed to the end and write a prequel.
Which one is the better style?
opinions please.

Any method (style) is OK.May be narrative decides.
Babai, excited to hear this! Option 1 or 2 works best, in my opinion. If you have an action thriller in mind, option 2 may not be bad (Desmond Bagley's 'Tightrope Men' begins with his protagonist waking up in a strange hotel room and not remembering his name). A slow burn suspense/drama/character driven story series seeking to establish the tone/atmosphere/characters: Option 1 may work best. 'Remains of the Day' by Ishiguro is a great example.
One more definition to sequel.
A published, broadcast, or recorded work that develops the theme of an earlier one.
Also, a story could fall into all the three categories. It depends on the perception of readers. No single person has unique thoughts. I feel its difficult to categorize.
For example, the recent Baahubali movie could be categorized into a flash back and the upcoming part 2 into sequel.
It depends on the number of versions or articles you wish to publish.
I heard English version of movie Ghajani is also a crazy mixture of sequels and prequels and it was a great hit.
