America becoming India even as India becomes America?

Here is an interesting article in San Jose Mercury News about multi-generational households from recent census survey.

Here are some excerpts.
Influenced largely by cultural and economic forces, multigenerational households experienced a dramatic resurgence in the past decade, rising 30 percent, according to the U.S. census.

1 in 5 Latino households have at least three generations living under one roof, census data released this week shows. "It's a real stigma in Latino families to send your parents to a nursing home," said Darlene Tenes, a community activist who lives in Alum Rock. "You take care of your parents."

The same goes for many Asian immigrant families. At the Indian Community Center in Milpitas, many of the seniors there emigrated from India to live with their children and grandchildren.

A report by the Pew Research Center first picked up on the trend using preliminary census data from 2008, which showed a record 49 million Americans, or 16.1 percent of the total U.S. population, live in multigenerational households. That was a dramatic shift from previous decades, when the number plunged to 12 percent in 1980 from about 25 percent in 1940. The drop began as World War II veterans established their nuclear families in suburbia and the general health and wealth of seniors improved, allowing them to live on their own longer. The increase in extended-family households has taken place among all major demographic groups nationwide, according to the Pew study.
